'A dangerous pastime' 'I know!'*

This is where I work.

Pretty, isn't it? See all those windows? I look out them at every opportunity. This morning, as I watched a man from True Green do his job I thought about how the grass is always greener on the other side (no pun intended between his job and the saying). He kicked a dead plant for a good three minutes, trying to loosen the roots I suppose. I thought two things, first - I noted that this is probably a good way to remove dead plants, and since we've had a dry summer and I suck at caring for green things, this will likely come in handy. The second thought was how I wished for a different job, but I knew deep down that if I had a different job I'd probably be wishing for this one.

I am a Human Resources Assistant. I assist all the other members of the department, from payroll to recruiting and everything in between. There are days or even weeks where I am happy with my job, but most of the time is spent wondering if there is something out there that I might actually enjoy on a long term basis. When I enjoy something, I tend to become really good at it. Like - cashiering (believe it or not - I love doing this). Was I a good cashier? Heck yeah. I took it to the next level to become a trainer and try to get other people to be good at it too...not so easy by the way. Also not easy is the fact that you are training people to do something that you love to do...and you aren't allowed to do it because you need to focus on training them. Even with these two jobs I had things I didn't like. I know that every job will have aspects I don't enjoy...but it doesn't stop me from trying to figure out what I might like better than this. My coworker knows that I don't intend to have a career in HR, I am pretty much working here, waiting for my brain to finally kick in and think of something better.

So here's the big question - and I normally don't do this but that's because I don't usually have a lot of questions. I want to know what you do for a living. What are the pros and cons of your job...and maybe - do you have any openings at your company? Just trying to help the good ole' brain get started.

P.S. is anyone (or does anyone know) a literary agent who wouldn't mind taking a chance on an unknown kid*? It would be much appreciated. Thanks!

By the way, I'm a high school English teacher. And I usually like it. But sometimes I just want to work in a sleepy bookstore where I can read all the time. And cashier.

Beauty & the Beast...one of my faves.

This post made me laugh because I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. It's interesting, because I seem to have surrounded myself in childhood with friends who were predestined for this & that - and they've stuck with it, and love it. My family & I are not like this. We hop around to different jobs to make ends meet. But I still haven't figured out what I want to do. If you figure it out, please clue me in...I need help just as much as you do!

Ooh - chance on an unknown kid - Clueless. Marisa used to quote that to me all the time to make me laugh. :)

Are you looking National or Church-y? My friend here at church just got an agent through Deseret. Or was it Covenant?

yeah, my job is pretty sweet. However, you gotta be married first. Also, you gotta deal with a lot less sleep, not getting a shower everyday and deal with a lot of whining and crying...that last part may fit what you do already. Anyway, the quote is from Beauty and the Beast.

taking a chance on an unknown kid-clueless :)

I work for a furniture dealership. it's not very glamorous, and most days, quite boring. Unless of course I order the wrong fabric on a chair and then it's as if someones dying of a kidney failure and we don't have a donor kidney on hand. I like the company I work for, but the work is blah most days. Oh well, it pays the bills. Although my brother who never went to college, works at a call center and makes more money than me, the kid with a degree and thousands of dollars in student loans...tell me how that's fair! And we're hiring installers if you can lift 50 lbs and want to move to Idaho :)

Katie - Probably national cause I don't think my book is going to be deseret-y...but I'll give church-y books a go and if I have any success I'll get that info from you :)

Sarah - I can lift 50 lbs...and lived in Idaho...but I think I am done with both of those. Thanks though!

Of course - thanks everyone for sharing their "Careers"...so far Jo's looks the most appealing, but she's right, I have to hold off on that one.

Summers off as a teacher wouldn't be so bad though...hmm.

I'm a preschool teacher and I laugh a lot and have very interesting conversations as well as hear some cool secrets and awesome jokes. I do have to help with an occasional accident and some conflict management. However I'm horribly underpaid and frustration with parents is a constant struggle.

Accountant/Office Manager/IT Department.

I wear a lot of hats in my job, seeing as I am the only employee. The pay is great (for this area, anyway), but it takes a toll on me. I work six days a week 6 months out of the year, I go to sleep thinking about how to deal with a tax problem, and I am always mentally exhausted.

I like it most days, but there are some days, more often lately, that I get calls for the dumbest things. I think it is the economy and people are penny pinching more than ever.

Oh, and I was an Elementary Ed major for a long time. There is a special place in heaven for those people. I just couldn't do it.
